A Core Curriculum for Cardiovascular Care

Led by Professor Lis Neubeck, the 2023 update of the Core Curriculum in Cardiovascular Nursing (2015) embraces the formation of the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing & Allied Professionals (ACNAP) & reflects the diverse professional backgrounds of ACNAP members, including nurses, allied health professionals, & healthcare scientists.


Using the CanMEDs framework, the curriculum defines the knowledge, skills & attitudes required of NAPs who engage with people with cardiovascular disease. The core curriculum sets the standard for a minimum level of competence in cardiovascular care & aims to support NAPs develop from trainee to trainer, observer to independent within a robust clinical structure.


The curriculum consists of 9 chapters:

  1. The multi-disciplinary team
  2. Imaging
  3. Coronary artery disease
  4. Valvular heart disease
  5. Rhythm disorders
  6. Heart failure
  7. Acute cardiovascular care
  8. Prevention, rehabilitation and sports
  9. Cardiac patients in other settings (e.g. pregnancy, trauma, non-cardiac surgery, adult congenital heart disease)
